Blackberry users often subscribe for a separate data plan to enable internet access on PC - This tutorial will show you how to easily share your blackberry internet plan with your PC to avoid double charges.

There are different software out there to help you do this - For this tutorial you will need to install the BlackBerry Desktop software version 6.0, 6.1.

Set up your mobile Internet settings
Before a BlackBerry smartphone can be used as a modem, set up the mobile Internet settings. To do this, Select or create a profile that contains the information required by the wireless service provider to permit the Internet connection. Some profiles have been provided, but new profiles can also be created by completing the following steps:

  • Connect the BlackBerry smartphone to the computer.
  • Launch the BlackBerry Desktop Software 6.0 and click Tools > Mobile Internet settings.
Do one of the following:
  • Click the profile for the wireless service provider in the Profile drop-down list. In the Profiles Settings section if its provided OR Click Add custom profile if the wireless service provider does not appear in the Profile drop-down list.
Type a name for the profile and other information that is required for the Profiles Settings section. E.g APN, username and password (usually wap or web) Required information can vary for each wireless service provider.
  • Click OK.

Connect to the Internet using the BlackBerry smartphone as a modem
To perform this task, set up your mobile Internet settings to create a connection profile. Depending on the wireless service plan, extra fees might apply.

  • Connect the BlackBerry smartphone to the computer.
  • In the BlackBerry Desktop Software, click Tools > Start Mobile Internet.
  • Click Connect.
Note: a screen will appear displaying the connection time and amount of data downloaded.

To end the connection, click the Internet connection status. If the BlackBerry Desktop Software is already closed, click on the Dial-Up icon in the notification area of the Windows® taskbar.

Setup a Dial Up internet connection to your blackberry
This is a manual configuration useful if you don't want to use the Blackberry desktop Software to create a dial up automatically. Required Items:
  • Download and install BlackBerry Desktop software 6.0, 6.1, or 7.0
  • Add the internet access point to your dial up connection (APN)
To set up an Internet access point name (APN) - for GSM devices only - complete the following steps:
On the computer, click Start > Control Panel.
    Double-click Phone and Modem Options.
In the Phone and Modem Options window, click the Modems tab.
Select Standard Modem and click Properties.
    Click Change Settings.
In the Standard Modem Properties window, click the Advanced tab.
In the Extra initialization commands field, type the following:
    +cgdcont=1,"IP","<Device Internet APN>"  e.g +cgdcont=1,"IP","web.gprs.mtnnigeria.net"
Note: APN must have been added to your blackberry device settings - If the Internet APN is unknown, drop a comment requesting for it.
    Click OK.
In the Phone and Modem Options window, click OK.

Set up dial up network (Windows® XP)
Click Start > Control Panel > Network Connections.
Click Create a New Connection. The New Connection Wizard opens.
Click Next.
Select the Connect to the Internet option, and then click Next.
Select Set up my connection manually, and then click Next.
Select Connect using a dial-up modem, and then click Next.
In the Select a Device screen, select the Modem - Standard Modem check box, and then click Next.
In the ISP Name field, type a name for the desired connection, and then click Next.
Perform the appropriate step from the following list:
If the BlackBerry smartphone operates on GPRS or EDGE networks, type *99# in the Phone number field, and click Next.
If the BlackBerry smartphone operates on UMTS networks, type *98# in the Phone number field, and click Next.
If the BlackBerry smartphone operates on CDMA or EVDO networks, type #777 in the Phone number field, and click Next.
Indicate which users will have access to the connection, and then click Next.
Type the user name and password provided by the wireless service provider. If the wireless service provider has confirmed that this information is not required, leave the fields blank. Click Next.
Click Finish.
In the Connect window, click Properties.
In the Properties window, verify that Modem - Standard Modem appears beneath the Connect using heading, and then click Configure.
In the Modem Configuration window, clear the Enable hardware flow control check box and make sure that none of the other check boxes are selected.
Click OK.
In the Properties window, click OK.

Open BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
Click Start > Settings > Network Connections > <name of your new connection>.
