The Nigerian Police force used to be known as the "Men in Black" - but inline with the recent transformation agenda of the Federal government and the desire of the Police Management Team to reform and the police, that nickname "Men In Black" is no more as new uniforms for the Police has been approved as part of the reforms and image-laundering for the force.

The Acting Inspector-General of Police Mohammed Abubakar, in Abuja on Tuesday explained that President Goodluck Jonathan approved a test-run of the uniforms for the force as one of its operational attire.

A statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olusola Amore, quoted Abubakar as saying that his appearance in the new police camouflage was to test-run the uniform as one of the force’s operational outfits.

It said the camouflage, which is an admixture of black, white and ash colours, would serve as an operational uniform for the police with some inherent advantages when fully integrated and confirmed as one of the official police outfits.

Abubakar said, “The advantages of the new police camouflage include cost effective to maintain; operationally durable; highly customized with security features to forestall impersonation and environmentally- friendly.

“The police boss is using this medium to call on general public to come up with constructive criticisms regarding the new police camouflage, so that public opinion will be given adequate consideration.”

Already Nigerians are saying how they feel about the new change. A user - Mr Abbey, sent this in:

Change of garment without change in character is colossal waste of resources and misplaced priority. FG, I think what is of great urgency to Nigerian now is the issue of security. Please can you divert this money for police training and equipment in order for our police to be a match to Boko Haram terrorism?

Another user said: God will punish any Police man that will wear this fine Uniform and come and ask for 20 naira from me on the Road!!!

Its a nice idea to change the uniform, but the character maters a lot. The NPF can also include navy blue and dark brown combination in the camouflage and I will suggest that they should not include green, because green always depict military to a lot of people.
