Bloggers, webmasters etc on the Internet all agree that search engine ranking is what makes a website successful, regardless of it's content. These search engines provide webmaster accounts like http://www.google.com/webmaster and http://www.bing.com/webmaster to help administrate, and resolve problems that hinder you and help better site indexing and ranking.

The techniques to help optimize your page ranking is no big secret and not difficult.
This thread will look at those tips that actually work. And you are welcome to share more that you know of.

Non-www to www Forced redirection to avoid duplicate contents. (SEO)
Recently, while snooping around the Google Webmaster settings, I discovered that search engines see ngbuzz.com and www.ngbuzz.com as two different links with separate contents. This has a huge disadvantage on general search engine rating as search engines frown at duplicate contents.

Thus as part of search engine optimization technics, your domain should be set to redirect incoming HTTP requests from crawlers to Either "yourdomain.com" or "www.yourdomain.com" And not the two at the same time.

To avoid such problems you can use the following lines of code in your .htaccess file to force only the www version of your web site:

Code: [Select]
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www.your_domain.com$
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.your_domain.com/$1 [R=301]
Please, note that the .htaccess should be located in the web site main folder.

This will redirect all requests to the non-www version of your site to the www version using 301 Permanent redirect which will make the search engines to index your site only using the www.your_domain.com URL, thus preventing duplicate content. In this way you will avoid a duplicate content penalty.

A seperate code is used to redirect  www to non-www requests, but who would want to do that anyways...

SEO article writing - best practices

As a part of Search engine Optimization - Articles, Posts and other write-ups on your blog or website plays an important role in determining your overall site rating and search engine ranking.

it's all about making you content "Unique". let see how this works:

John wrote an article titled "Search engine optimization Tips" on 1st June
Mary Copied the article With the same Title on 10th June

In the above example: John's webpage will rank higher in search engine results than mary's because he is the Original Author. Mary would do better if she Edited the article, Added her own content to it, maybe a different Title before posting.

We're saying:
Copy & Paste = Not Good
Copy, Edit & Paste = Good
Writing A Fresh article = The Best

No sort of purnishment or penalty for copying or quoting somebody's article, that's just the way people stay informed, and share the news, you're better off writing a fresh article in your own words if you take Search engine Optimization seriously.

happy writing!!
