Demands Of NLC Over The Protest.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) was constituted as the only national federation of trade union in Nigeria as of 1978. But before then, about four other labour centers were existing. NLC has has a chequered history, surviving two instances of dissolution of its national organs and consequent appointment of the administrators.

The National Labour Congress did a nationwide protest on Wednesday August 2, 2023 over the removal of fuel subsidy In Ikeja, Lagos State capital. The NLC had given the government seven days ultimatum with threats of nationwide strike. And this is it.

The Protest Is Not To Fight The Government- NLC.

The Nigeria Labour Congress asked the government to provide palliatives to the citizens. And according to the NLC, the decision to embark on the protest was not to fight the government but to demand good palliatives.

The deputy president of NLC, Adeyanju Adewale, while addressing the protesters, siad that they are not going to fight the government. He said “They should not see us as if we are fighting them, we are not fighting them, what we are asking for is to five us sound palliative incentives that will take care of our families.

DSS Operatives Occupy Lagos Assembly.

The Department of State Service (DSS) dispatched some of its personnel to the Lagos State Assembly premises, where members of the NLC were protesting. The operatives were seen in the premises of the complex, as demonstrators gathered at the gate entrance.

Demands Of NLC Over The Protest.

These are the demands of NLC to the government.

  • Immediate implementation in good faith of the resolutions with congress jointly signed with government and TUC.
  • Immediate reversal of all anti-poor policies of government including the recent hike in PMS price, school fees and VAT.
  • Fix and local refineries in Port Harcourt, Warri and Kaduna.
  • Release of 8 months withheld salaries of university lecturers and workers.
  • To put a stop to inhuman actions and policies of government.
  • Accord appropriate recognition and support to the presidential steering committee and the work of its sub committees.
